Cap'n Mavericks school of piracy part 2

Harrrrrrr Mateys

This be part 2 of the Whydah Galley Harrrrrrrrr.

The Whydah Gally sunk in a storm April 26 1717 a half mile off of Cape Cod Harrrrrr. The Whydah Gally was originally a slave ship from London Harrrr. It was filled with cloth liqur hand tools and other small goods to be traded for 700 slaves Harrrrr. After it made its way to trade the slaves it came back to England with gold and other booty Harrrr. Then on the Whydah's second voyage it was perused by two pirates vessels Harrr.the Whydah had gold silver indigo sugar and other goods abord at the time. Cap'n Samuel "Black Sam" Bellamy on his ships the Sultana and Mary Anne seized a dozen men form the Whydah and let rest of the vanquished crew take the Sultana Harrrrr. He claimed the Whydah as his flag ship Harrrrr. In April of 1717the pirates where robbing other vessels Harrrrrr. They where on there way to Richmond Island off of the coast of Main But they diverted to Cape Cod where legend has it Black Sam's mistress lived Harrrr. A huge storm came in with wind gust of 70 miles Harrrr. It trapped the Whydah in the surf and it cashed in to a sandbar then sunk Harrrr. There be 146 crew men and only two survived the storm Harrrrrr. England demanded salvage from the wreckage the capes locals handed back some wooden beams, guns and some gem studded rings form the dead fingers of crew men Harrrr how terrible is that Harrrrr. One of the sole survivors made a map of the wreckage and Barry Clifford used it searched for a couple of years and found the ship In 1998 Harrrrrr.

This be a picture of Barry Clifford and the bell of the Whydah Harrrrr.

picture found on http://www.atochagold.com/TheWhydah.htm Harrrr. The Whydah pirate ship is part of a traveling exhibit Harrrrr. Harrrrr Mateys

Yer Cap'n be reading The Midwest Traveler. No self respecting pirate would be with out his AAA Harrrrrr. It has this great article about a cave Harrrr. The cave is not that far away from yer Cap'n Harrrrr.

In 1795 the cave was made in to a makeshift tavern and was operated by pirates Harrrr. They luerd boatmen and other travelers in the cave with the tavern then they would rob the travelers and boatmen Harrrrrr. They where in operation for almost 30 years Harrrrrr. That be a long time of piracy Harrrrr. Now it be part of Cave-in-Rock state park in Illinois go see it for yer selves Harrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!! The best part is ye can take a boat there Harrrrr. it is called the Queen of Egypt Harrrrrr.

Black Bart

Harrrrrr Mateys
Ye have all seen the movie Princess Bride where they talk about the Dread Pirate Roberts?Harrrrr. Well that character be based on the real life pirate Black Bart or Bartholomew Roberts Harrrr. He be one of the most successful pirates of the golden pirate age Harrrrrrr. Those be good times mateys. Black Bart captured over 400 ships and over 50 million pounds of loot! Harrr way to go Bart. He drank lots of tea not so much rum Harrrr.
Black Bart always wear a hat with a red feather Harrrrr.
Black Bart also had two diffrent pirate flags Harrrr.

Are these flags cool or what Harrrr.

This be a pic of Black Bart Harrrr. Ye can see one of his flags in the background Harrrr.
He became a Cap'n in 1719 Harrr. Unfortunatly he was only a pirate for 4 years Harrrr. He died in Febuary 10 1722, shot by a grape shot during a battle Harrr. His Crew dumped his body in the sea as he requested then they fight on but after several hours of fighting they where overtaken and thrown into prison at the Cape Coast Castle in West Africa Harrrr. This be when the largest pirate trial ever happened Harrrr. 54 of his crew men where hanged, 37 of his crew where inprisoned, 70 African pirates where sold in to slavery and the rest were released. Harrrr. Not a great ending for a great pirate. Yer legend will live on Black Bart Harrrrr.

Ships

Harrrrr Mateys
Yer Cap'n be impressed with the poems ye mateys wrote Harrrr. They were great Harrr. Today for Cap'n Maverick school of Piracy we are going to talk about Pirate ships Harrrrrr.

This be a great pirate ship that Kat has found Harrrr. It be a pirate Sloop Harrrr. It has a Rapier like bowsprit almost as long as the hull that lets the canvas sail move the ship very nimbily Harrrr. in good winds a square topsail gives it an more speed, it could go over 11 knots at times and can carry 75 pirates and 14 cannons on the ship Harrrr.
Harrrr this be a Schooner it was often used by pirates in North American and Caribbean waters. In a stiff breeze it could go about 11 knots Harrr. It could carry a crew of 75 men, 8 cannons and four swivel guns. It was also an ideal ship to manuver in shallow waters Harrr.

The Navy Snow. The Royal Navy favored this vessel for patrolling the waters for pirates Harrrr. It is manuverable and can go at good speeds, can carry a crew of 80 Harrr. That be a lot of Royal navy men Harrr.

This be a Naval Sloop, a fast ship at 113 tons, 65 foot ship that can carry 70 men Harr. It could also fit oars thrugh small openings between the gun ports to pursue pirates Harrr. In good weather the naval ship could fire 12 nine poundscannons at the rate of 2 rounds every three minutes Harrrrr. Watch out for this ship mateys.

This be a flag ship Harrrr. It was valued for its size at 350 tons and 110 feet. This ship was more for long voyages and crewed by a 150 pirates to 200 pirates, could hold over 20 cannons and has a great cargo capacity.

This be biggest merchant vessel the East Indianman. It was built to carry the wealth of the orient at 700 tons and measured 160 feet at the main deck and 34 feet at the beam. It could hold 54 cannons and crew of 300 Harrrr.

This be a Dutch Flute. It was introduced in the 17th Century Harrr. Inexpensive to build and easy to afford, it could hold about 12 pirates. These be good prey for pirates Harrr.

This be a Brigantine. It was the chosen combat craft of many pirates Harrrr. It is a two masted vessel. It was very versatile with square sails driving the ship at its best in quartering winds. The ship is 150 tons, can mount 10 cannons and carry 100 pirates Harrr.

So mateys, what be yur favorite ship?

Walking the Plank

Harrrr Mateys
Today be Wednesday so it be Cap'n Mavericks School of Piracy Harrrr.
Today we talking about walking the plank Harrrrrrr. The myth started about 100 B.C. Pirates preyed on Roman shipping in the Mediterranean. The Romans captives would be told they could walk home but the only way off the ship was over the railing Harrrr.

There is only one account of a real walking the plank Harrrr. The Cap'n was George Wood. His mutinous mates forced a number of loyal crewmen "to walk the Plank" extended from the ship's side Harrr.
That is all of the plank story yer Cap'n could find Harrrr.

Navigation Class

Harrrrr Mateys
Today be Wednesday ye mateys know what that means Cap'n Mavericks school of piracy Harrr.
Star of the Seven seas and Black Jack a Roo sent yer Cap'n a cool web site the other day Thank ye Mateys It was very helpful in today's class Harrrr.
Yer Cap'n found information on how to make a compass Harrrr. This way ye mateys know where ye be going at all times Harrrr.
You will need a magnet, a cork, a nail, a shallow dish approximately eight or nine inches in diameter, a twelve inch square piece of oaktag, and a ballpoint pen or indelible marker.
1.Mark the four points of the compass along the edges of the oaktag square. Include NE, SE, NW, and SW if you choose.
2.Magnetize the nail by rubbling it, in one direction only, with one pole of the magnet.
3.Press nail through the length of the cork until the cork is centered on the nail.
4.Fill the dish with water and place it in the center of the oaktag square.
5.Place cork in the shallow dish of water.
6.Line up the north mark on the oaktag square with the pointed end of the nail.

Harrrrr Yer Cap'n could not find or didn't have a nail, oaktag, a shallow dish, or a cork Harrrr. So in true pirate fashion yer cap'n improvised Harrrr. I used a sewing needle, a plastic straw, a small bowl, and paper Harrrrr
Magnetizing the needle Harrrrr.

Lining up the point to North Harrrrr.

We got it exactly pointing north Harrrr.

Yer Cap'n using his compass to plot out his next adventure Harrrr.
